Severe Wildfires Sweep Northern Algeria, Threatening Homes and Critical Infrastructure
Severe late-August wildfires across northern Algeria have caused widespread destruction, placing homes, agricultural lands and critical transport corridors directly in the path of rapidly spreading flames.
The destruction reported across Jijel, Béjaïa and Tizi Ouzou has claimed at least 12 lives and forced the emergency closure of major national highways. The situation has created significant challenges for local communities and emergency response teams.
The latest outbreak follows a summer marked by repeated fires across the country. Authorities recorded nearly 2,000 fires nationwide in July, highlighting the scale and persistence of the wildfire problem.
In the northeastern province of Annaba, fires at the end of July forced more than 100 people to leave their homes and damaged nearly 150 houses.
The current fires have again brought residential areas, roads and other infrastructure into the path of rapidly spreading flames. Emergency services continue to face difficult conditions as communities attempt to protect homes, agricultural areas and essential transport routes.
Northern Algeria regularly experiences forest fires during the summer months. However, increasingly frequent periods of drought combined with intense heat can create conditions in which fires spread more rapidly and become more difficult to control.
